Today is June 25, the day in 1530 when the declaration of faith, supported by the imperial estates who backed the evangelical movement, was publicly read in the bishop’s palace in Augsburg, in the presence of Emperor Charles V. The late medieval palace no longer stands, but the old tower still remains. A memorial plaque on the façade commemorates the place where the “Augsburg Confession” was publicly proclaimed. This document continues to serve as a guideline for Lutheran churches around the world. On June 25, the Wittenberg Center’s 2023 Summer Course visited Augsburg, and Professor Christopher Brown from Boston University read passages from the Confession at this very place. We tried to imagine what this important event must have been like. Augsburg is worth a visit, and the Augsburg Confession is worth a look!
