In the middle of the twelve-day course, the group took a day trip to Kairouan and El Jem. Kairouan, the ancient capital of the Maghreb is an impressive testimony to the Islamic culture of North Africa. The “Great Mosque” with its wide courtyard, massive minaret and forest of columns in the prayer hall is simply stunning. At El Jem, the group was immersed in the Roman North Africa of late antiquity. Archaeologists have uncovered magnificent mosaics in this metropolis of olive and almond cultivation, and the amphitheater is considered the best preserved in the Mediterranean.
