A new reading group meets on Friday mornings (CET) to translate Latin speeches by Philipp Melanchthon. At the University of Wittenberg, many speeches were given, some for special university occasions, others in classrooms, others for graduations, and many for the sake of practice. The nineteenth-century edition of Melanchthon’s works presents the speeches of “Germany’s Teacher” (Praeceptor Germaniae) in three thick volumes. They offer a lively picture of Reformation humanism, covering a wide range of topics and presented in good, accessible Latin. The new reading group is translating a selection of speeches, beginning with Melanchthon’s memorial oration for the late Emperor Maximilian in 1519.
