The Summer Course was privileged to have Professor Garrone from the Waldensian Faculty of Rome join us for the first three weeks of the course as the Wittenberg Center’s 2026 Research Fellow. Despite his many duties as President of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy, he came to Germany, participated in most of the course activities, and researched the history of Christian Zionism in the early modern period. As an Old Testament scholar with a strong interest in the reception of the Bible during the Reformation, his insights contributed much to the coursework. Discussing this topic with him made it clearer what the Reformers meant by claiming that understanding the Bible should be based solely on the Bible. Professor Garrone also introduced us to Italian Protestantism, especially the history of the Waldensian church.
